Why leap years exist
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Adding a day every four years over-corrects slightly (365.25), so the Gregorian calendar skips three leap days every 400 years. The result drifts by only about one day in 3,000 years.
In Excel or Google Sheets
Year in A1=IF(OR(MOD(A1,400)=0, AND(MOD(A1,4)=0, MOD(A1,100)<>0)), "Leap", "Common")
Is 2026 a leap year?
No — 2026 is a common year with 365 days.
When is the next leap year?
The next leap year is 2028; the next February 29 is Tuesday, February 29, 2028, 510 days away.
How do leap years work?
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 — except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 was not and 2100 will not be.
What if you are born on February 29?
Leaplings usually celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in common years; legally, many places treat March 1 as the birthday in non-leap years.
